What Is a Same Day Dental Crown?
When you have a tooth that’s been damaged, your dentist may suggest same day dental crowns in Palos Heights, IL. Dental crowns can help protect your tooth enamel from further damage, and restore your smile.
It’s important to know what a dental crown is, how a same day dental crown is different, and which one is right for you. At Dr’s Les and Amanda McKane Dentistry, we offer same day dental crowns because they’re convenient for our patients. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a cap that fits over the tooth to prevent it from breaking. Dental crowns can be made from metal, resin or porcelain. Dental crowns can be tooth colored or metal colored, depending on what they’re made from.
What’s the Difference Between a Traditional Crown and Same Day Crown?
To install a crown, the tooth must be shaved down, and an impression made of the tooth. Then, the impression is sent to a lab where the lab techs create the dental crown that fits over the tooth. While the lab is making the crown, the patient wears a temporary crown. This can take a couple of weeks. When the crown is ready, the patient returns to the dentist’s office for the crown to be installed.
A same day dental crown is installed on the same day that the tooth is shaved down. There’s no need to return to the office for the crown to be installed, and there’s no need to worry about a temporary crown. The same day crown is made on site, so it can be available within a couple hours of shaving down the tooth.
